We, the undersigned,
take the crisis at HMP Woodhill
as a warning.

The government's own prison watchdog has issued an Urgent Notification, its most serious warning, about HMP Woodhill - twice in three years. The prison is failing. It is not safe. Meanwhile, men in crisis wait an average of 191 days for a transfer to secure mental health care - among the longest delays inspectors have ever recorded.

This is the world the Woodhill Families have lived through. They have lost sons and brothers to self-inflicted deaths at HMP Woodhill.

We're asking those in power to back three practical changes under The Woodhill Commitments:

  1. The governor of HMP Woodhill pledges to create a safer prison - covering better responsive action in crisis situations, improved training on suicide prevention, and better communication with next of kin.

  2. The Minister for Prisons prioritises removing the means of self-harm - ligature points - from cells across the prison estate.

  3. Bereaved families have a say in how deaths in custody are reviewed, including representation on the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody.

We’ve invited the governor of HMP Woodhill and the Minister for Prisons to back ‘The Woodhill Commitments’.
